FROM THE ENGINE ROOM OF AUSTRALIAN CIRCUS

6 NEW WORKS BY INDEPENDENT ARTISTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN 2022

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is thrilled to announce that six new works will be developed by independent artists through the Under Construction residency program in 2022.

Under Construction provides independent circus artists with access to the Fruit Flies world- class circus facility in Albury, production advice and mentorship, accommodation in the regional city and seed project funding.

Artistic Director Anni Davey says “We received an unprecedented number of applications this year and the range and quality of the proposed projects was extremely strong.”

“The Flying Fruit Fly Circus has been the engine room of developing cotemporary circus since it was founded in 1979. The 2022 program will provide 6 residencies to a cross section of emerging and established individual artists and groups to assist the development of a new show.”

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THE 2022 UNDER CONSTRUCTION RESIDENTS:

A Good Catch (Vic)

A Good Catch (Debra Batton, Sharon Gruenert and Spenser Inwood) will develop The Declamatory Space, a new outdoor work that amplifies feminist provocations with humour, spectacle, and declarations.

Collective Circus (Qld)

Collective Circus (Zoe Joiner, Levi Dan, Izzy Lawton, Eve Timmins, Christina Godwin and Tallulah Benneton) is an emerging group of circus artists based in Brisbane. They will work with director Alex Mizzen to create their first full-length show, Waitlisted, that explores social norms and societal expectations of young people.

Flip Kammerer & Fez Fa’anana (Vic & Qld)

Flip Kammerer and Fez Fa’anana will combine forces once again to undertake conceptual and creative development of FLIP the KAMMERER, a new autobiographic theatrical work celebrating the punk empowerment of circus and the life expectancy of a Flying Fruit Fly.

Harley Mann (Vic)

Harley is a Wakka Wakka man from Queensland who grew up on Gadigal Country. Harley will develop Sertraline, a darkly humorous contemporary duet with a sandbag, drawing on Harley’s First Nations heritage and personal experience of depression.

Natural State Circus (Tas)

Tony Rooke, Freyja Wild, Conor Wild, Lewie West and Mieke Lizotte will develop Orbit, a new work that will mark the official beginning of their new company Natural State Circus, that aims to bridge gaps between genres and bring circus quirk to the undercurrent of Tasmania’s dark arts scene.

Throw Catch Collective (Vic)

Byron Hutton and Richard Sullivan from Throw Catch Collective will work with composer and musician Samuel Kreusler to further research and develop their signature combination of music and juggling, and build this into performance pieces for their new work Escalate.
